The Old Testament.

1 Maccabees, originally written in Hebrew and surviving only in a Greek translation, relates the history of the Maccabees from 175 BCE until 134 BCE. I Maccabees is the main, and at times the only, historical source for the period. The book opens with the conquest of Alexander the Great, but immediately after this relates the activities of Antiochus Epiphanes and the Jewish Hellenizers (whom the author calls “the sons of Belial” – the reprobates) and summarily reviews the causes of the First Maccabees is in a way reminiscent of the Book of Judges (the Maccabees are “those men into whose hand the salvation of Israel was given” [I Maccabees 5:62]). Many original prayers, speeches, and poems embedded in First Maccabees reflect the strong religious feelings of the new rulers. One concerning theological teaching from 2 Maccabees is the concept of praying on behalf of the dead (2 Maccabees 12:34-35). Second, 2 Maccabees 15:14 speaks of Jeremiah praying for the people on Earth, introducing what Catholics teach as the prayers of the saints , a doctrine not found in the Old and New Testaments.
